The Order of Hospitallers of St Anthony
The Order of Hospitallers of St Anthony was founded in Dauphiné, near Grenoble (c. 1100) and acted a center for pilgrims suffering from the socalled “St Anthony’s fire” or ergotism. There had been nearly 390 hospitals scattered throughout Europe. In France, the order was absorbed in 1775 by the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem (Order of Malta).
